Twig headboards are beautiful additions to a rustic, primitive or country-style bedroom. You can make your own twig headboards with natural wood that you may be able to find on your own property. You also have the option of purchasing twigs from your local florist or landscape supplier. However you find twigs for your headboard, it's a good idea to use dry wood to make twig furniture. If your wood is green, leave it alone for at least three months and let it air dry.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plywood
  • Saw
  • Stain and sponge
  • Twigs
  • Clear Liquid Nail
  • Wood sealer or polyurethane
  • Stud finder
  • Wall hangers
  1. Step 1

Cut a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood to fit on the wall behind your bed. You can shape the plywood any way you'd like to contour the headboard for your particular style.

  2. Step 2

Stain the back, front and edges of the cut plywood with a color that matches closely to the color of your twigs.

  3. Step 3

Cut twigs with a diameter of around 2 inches to fit the perimeter edge of your plywood. The larger twigs will give your headboard more definition and dimension. You don't need to have long sections for the perimeter; you can lay shorter twigs end to end, all the way around.

  4. Step 4

Lay the cut plywood down on a flat surface and attach the perimeter twigs to the ¾-inch edge with a bead of clear Liquid Nail. This process will take a bit longer than if you used screws, but using adhesive eliminates the risk of splitting the twigs and provides for a seamless design. Brace the twigs to the edge until the adhesive dries.

  5. Step 5

Cut twigs to fit vertically or horizontally on the face of the plywood, whichever best fits your design preference. You can also make a pattern with the twigs, such as small squares made from vertically run twigs next to small squares made from horizontally run twigs.

  6. Step 6

Attach the twigs to the plywood individually with clear Liquid Nail to cover the plywood. Let the adhesive dry.

  7. Step 7

Apply a coat of wood sealer or clear polyurethane to the twigs for protection. Attach your twig headboard to wall studs with wall hangers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stain your twigs darker or lighter than your plywood for design contrast.
