If you have a knack for sewing or fashion or just know exactly what you want consider designing your own wedding dress. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Look through some bridal magazines for design ideas. There are many different magazines out on the market devoted to bridal planning. Wedding periodicals are often chock full of advice about wedding dresses and advertisements for wedding dresses from major bridal stores. Purchase a copy of one or two magazines so you can pull out dresses that capture your attention.

Decide on the material you want to use. Traditional wedding dresses are made from luxurious fabrics such as delicate silks and satins. You need not limit yourself to such materials. Modern day wedding dress designers have been experimenting with all sorts of different materials including jersey and knits. Find material that expresses who you are and don't worry if it doesn't immediately scream bride when you touch it.

Pick a length for the dress. Traditional wedding dresses are ankle length with a train in the back. Many brides still opt for this silhouette. You can go longer or shorter if you choose. If this is your second wedding you may prefer a simple cocktail length dress rather than one with an elaborate train.

Choose a shape for the dress. A fitted sheath can look great if you have a thin figure. If you are more full figured consider a wedding dress that will give you a waistline such as princess style that is gathered at the middle. A fishtail dress or one that is shaped like a tube and then pulls away at your knees can be a very dramatic choice.

    • 5

Choose sleeves and a neckline. Decide how long you want to sleeves to be. A dress can have any number of sleeve lengths including cap sleeves, mid-elbow and full length sleeves. Decide on the neckline as well. A neckline can plunge to the top of your bust for a sexy look or crawl up to nearly your chin for a more demure outfit.

Add details. Many wedding dresses have intricate beadwork on the bodice or lace on the skirt. A plain wedding dress with very little detail can make a very dramatic statement and call attention to your figure. A more detailed design can add texture and complete the look when seen from afar as you walk down the isle to meet your future husband.

Choose a color. Most wedding dresses are white. White comes in many different shades including ivory, snow white or whites with a hint of color such as blue or pink. A hint of color can compliment the dresses your bridesmaids have chosen. Those who are planning their second weddings may want to think about a more subdued choice such as beige or even navy blue.
