How to Choose a Car Cover

Buying a car cover can protect your vehicle if it's sitting outside. The best cover will shield your car from pollution, dirt, tree sap, bird feces and sun rays. It will guard your vehicle from dust and debris when it's parked inside as well. Not all car covers are made the same, however.

    Instructions

      • 1

Decide where you will use the car cover: inside or outside in the weather. You will also need to determine if you require a durable cover that will protect your vehicle when it's parked inside and out.

      • 2

Buy a car cover that's made out of heavy flannel if you're going to store your vehicle indoors only. These are usually heavier than other types, so they will protect against dents and dings as well as dirt and dust. This type of car cover is excellent for show cars.

Choose a less expensive car cover that's made of polyester and cotton for fundamental protection. This type makes an excellent indoor cover. Some can even protect your car from harmful UV rays and are waterproof. Read the product details on the package to find out. Polycotton car covers are breathable so condensation doesn't build up underneath them.

Select a car cover that's made with acrylic fibers for excellent protection. This type of protector is suitable for areas that have intense sunlight such as Arizona. They're more expensive to buy, but acrylic car covers are durable and long-lasting. They're also fade-resistant and waterproof.

Buy a custom-made car cover for the best protection. This type is made to fit the exact measurements of your vehicle. Provide the year, make, model and sub-model of your car when you order a custom car cover. Choose between indoor or outdoor use.

    Tips & Warnings

    • The best car covers are double-stitched for added durability. You can tell a well-made car cover by the amount of seams it has. The lesser number of seams, the better it will wear. Look for a cover that's treated to resist mold and mildew.

    • Don't choose a car cover by price alone. The cheapest products will provide the least amount of protection.
