Hooked rag rugs require a little preparation, but they are fun and easy to make once you get started and can provide a relaxing way to entertain yourself in the evenings for several days at a time. They are also a practical way to re-use old scraps of various fabrics rather than throwing tired old clothing away.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2-inch wide cotton strips
  • Tapestry canvas, 3 holes per inch
  • Rug hook
  • Strong glue
  1. Step 1

Push the rug hook through the first hole you'll be using (about 2 inches in from the edge to leave room for the border) and use it to snag a loop of fabric, then pull the hooked fabric through the hole to form a loop about 1/2-inch tall, depending on your preference.

  2. Step 2

Skip one hole, and repeat the process, drawing up another 1/2-inch tall loop in the next hole.

  3. Step 3

Continue the process until you have a completed rug, leaving a couple of inches of loose fabric on the ends.

  4. Step 4

Turn the edges of the rug under and sew or glue them into place to create a finished look.

  5. Step 5

Sew rug backing onto the back of your rug if you would like. Purchase rug backing at craft stores.

Tips & Warnings
  • Draw a design on the canvas and follow it with different colored scraps to create a lovely hooked rag rug. Rag rugs can also be knit, crocheted, or woven and sewn.
