Get Rid of Skunk Smell in Dogs

Thanks to your beloved dog's curiosity and persistence, one of your worst fears as a pet parent has just happened--your dog has been sprayed by a skunk. Skunk spray is made of an oily substance (thiols) that contains sulphur and has a very intense odor that is difficult to remove from your dog's fur or any other surface with which it comes in contact. You can decrease the intensity of the skunk spray odor on your dog's coat by taking action quickly and following these steps below.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 qt. 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 tsp. liquid dish soap
  • Rubber gloves
  • Bucket or bottle
  • Sheet, towel or cloth large enough to cover your dog
  1. Step 1

Wrap your dog in a sheet, blanket, towel or any cloth that you don't plan on ever using again when transporting your dog to the nearest hose or bath tub so that the skunk spray oil does not come in contact with any other surfaces.

  2. Step 2

Fill up a bucket or plastic bottle (such as a 2 liter soda bottle) with your solution of 1 qt. 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 tsp. liquid dish soap and gently mix together.

  3. Step 3

Put your rubber gloves on and slowly pour the solution over your dog's dry coat while working it deep down into her skin. Pay special attention to the area where your dog was sprayed by the skunk.

  4. Step 4

Once you have drenched your dog's coat completely with your solution, let it sit for 10 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Rinse your dog thoroughly with warm water while working the solution out with your gloved hands.

  6. Step 6

Let your dog's coat dry for approximately an hour and do a smell test. Repeat the above steps as necessary until the smell has faded enough that it is tolerable and no skunk spray oils can contaminate your house or surroundings.

Tips & Warnings
  • As an extra odor fighter, you can purchase a skunk odor remover from your local pet store (which often contains isopropyl alcohol and a type of enzyme) and apply to your dog's coat after you have bathed him with the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/liquid soap solution.
  • Do not store the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/liquid soap solution, as it will explode within a container. The thiols in skunk spray can burn your dog's eyes. Wash your dog's eyes out gently with warm water if skunk spray has gotten in his eyes. Your dog may still have a lingering skunk spray odor for a day or two after the above solution, despite your best efforts. Be patient; it will go away.
