How to Make a Poster in Photoshop

Whether artsy posters hung in apartments, or trendy posters hung in college dorms, many people like to have nice posters decorating the walls. Some people like to make their own posters using their photos or art. If you would like to create you own poster for yourself, as a gift, or even to sell online at a site like Cafepress, the process is fairly straightforward.

      On the Internet, go to Cafepress.com and sign up for either a free or paid account. A free account limits the types of items you can sell in your shop, and the paid account is charges a reasonable rate.

      Scan your chosen image into your computer, or load it directly from your camera using the USB connection. Save it to a folder where you can find it. Now open a photo-editing utility like Photoshop (or GIMP freeware).

      Select "File" and click "New." In the dialog box that opens make the pixel width and height settings 2000 x 2000, and the resolution 200. This gives you a document that is 10 x 10 inches, which is the size you want for the Cafepress square poster.

      Select "File" and click "Open." Browse for the image you saved and open it. Go to "Image" and click "Image Size." Make sure that you click to maintain the proportions. Select either the height or width (whichever is smaller, and change the number to 200. Change the resolution to 200. Copy and paste this image into the document you opened in step 3. Some cropping will probably occur, but you can move the pasted-in image to select what part gets cropped.

      Add whatever text you want on your poster using the "text" tool. Save you image as a high resolution JPEG. Now sign onto your account on Cafepress and load the poster design into your media basket. It is now ready to be placed on the poster template.
