How to Troubleshoot a Comcast Modem Light

In addition to being a cable TV service provider, Comcast also provides broadband Internet service via hard-wired cable modems. These modems include a series of lighted indicators (cable activity, cable link, PC link and Internet) that signify the status of a network connection. Troubleshooting with these indicators helps to solve Internet connection problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Power up the modem using its on/off switch, usually located on the right side of the device, which typically has four lights that are either flashing green or solid green. Cable activity (flashing), cable link (solid), PC link (flashing), Internet (solid).

    • 2

Power recycle the modem if the "cable activity" and the "PC link" lights are not flashing. To power recycle, unplug the modem for at least 30 seconds.

    • 3

Plug the power cable back into the modem and wait until the lights come on. If the cable activity and PC link lights begin flashing, launch a Web browser to check for an Internet connection.

    • 4

Reset your Comcast modem if you are still experiencing Internet connection failure. Press and hold the "reset" button on the back of the modem for about 5 seconds. If indicator lights come on, launch a Web browser and check for an Internet connection.
