For a way to entertain kids who are forced to stay indoors, play dough can be a good option. Most children love to shape and mold these pieces of colored clay into works of art straight from their imagination. You don't have to this buy it at the store. Making modeling clay for your kids is quick, simple and cheap.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • 2 tbsp. cream of tartar
  • Bowl
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp. cooking oil
  • Saucepan
  • Spoon
  • Wax paper
  • Food coloring
  • Zip lock bags
  1. Step 1

Combine the salt, flour and cream of tartar in a bowl. Next, pour 2 cups of cold water and the cooking oil in a saucepan.

  2. Step 2

Pour the bowl of flour into the water and stir to mix, making sure to dissolve as many lumps as possible.

  3. Step 3

Heat the flour mixture on medium heat, stirring often. When the mixture becomes thick enough to form a ball, remove the pan from heat.

  4. Step 4

Take the hot dough from the pan and set it on a sheet of wax paper. Let sit until cool enough to handle.

  5. Step 5

Make an indention in the play dough with your thumb. Add the food coloring to the dent you made. For a deeper color, add more drops and for a lighter color, add less.

  6. Step 6

Knead the cooked clay until smooth and the color is even. You can make play dough in as many different colors as you want or just leave it white.

  7. Step 7

Give your child the newly made play dough and watch as the enjoyment begins. When playtime is over, store the dough in zip lock bags or airtight containers.

Tips & Warnings
