Exchanging greeting cards is one of the cornerstones of celebrating Christmas. Those who must send Christmas cards to a large number of family and friends often spend a lot of money on commercial cards. To avoid the high cost of store-bought cards, some people choose to make homemade ones. Put a twist on the typical homemade Christmas card by adding a pop-up element to it. In addition to saving money, handcrafted pop-up cards and the effort put into them can go a long way in showing how much you care about your loved ones.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Blank paper
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Card stock
  1. Step 1

Draw the outline of a Christmas element--for example, a Christmas tree or Christmas tree ball--on a sheet of blank paper. The picture should measure approximately 5 inches tall and 3 inches wide. Add a rectangular tab to the middle of the right and left edges of the figure.

  2. Step 2

Color in the picture with markers or colored pencils. Avoid using crayons, whose wax-like texture can leave messy imprints once you insert the pop-up into the card. Remember to use Christmas-themed colors such as red and green.

  3. Step 3

Use scissors to cut out the picture, which will be the pop-up element. Fold it in half so that the crease runs vertically.

  4. Step 4

Position an 8 x 11 inch sheet of card stock in landscape orientation. Fold it in half so that the crease runs horizontally.

  5. Step 5

Open the folded card. Lay it on a flat surface so that the crease runs vertically.

  6. Step 6

Place the folded picture at the center of the card. Hold the picture so that the crease points toward the ceiling. Fold the tabs on the pop-up so that they are perpendicular to the rest of the picture. Use a glue stick to attach the bottom face of each rectangular tab to the card, approximately 1 inch to the left and right of the crease.

  7. Step 7

Give the glue several minutes to dry.

  8. Step 8

Open and close the card to check that the pop-up element works as intended. When you close the card, the pop-up should be folded and sandwiched between the two halves of the card, preventing it from wrinkling or getting damaged. As you open the card, the picture should unfold and protrude outward.

  9. Step 9

Decorate the area around the pop-up element, as well as the front and back of the card, with other Christmas-inspired images and messages.
