How to Make Waffle Cones
If you've ever been to an ice cream shop, then you've probably had a waffle cone. Waffle cones are true to their name: They are made from batter heated in a waffle iron that is shaped into a cone to hold ice cream. While waffle cones may seem like a treat only professionals can make, anyone with a waffle iron can make them at home. The batter comes from a basic recipe, but must be handled and shaped into cones while it's extremely hot, so practice caution and keep the young bakers away. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 2 large mixing bowls
- 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- Electric mixer
- 1 stick butter (1/2 cup)

Instructions

1
Place 1 stick of butter in a small saucepan, turn stove to low and heat until the butter melts without bubbling. Remove from heat and set aside to let cool.
-
2
Add 1/2 cup white granulated sugar, 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract and 2 eggs into a large mixing bowl. Turn your electric mixer to medium and beat until the mixture is thoroughly combined.
-
-
3
Pour in the melted butter and continue to mix until the butter is evenly distributed.
-
4
Place 2/3 cup flour, 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon and 1/8 tsp. salt into another mixing bowl and use a whisk to stir the ingredients together.
-
5
Pour the flour mixture slowly into the butter mixture and use the electric mixer on low to blend the two mixtures until they are just combined.
-
6
Coat your waffle iron evenly with cooking spray, then turn it on and let it preheat.
-
7
Open the iron and add 3/4 tbsp. waffle batter directly into the center of the waffle iron. Close the iron and let the batter heat for about 1 minute or until it's lightly browned with no soft spots.
-
8
Open the iron and remove the waffle. Wrap the waffle around the cone-shaped mold, then use your fingers to pinch the bottom point closed.
-
9
Leave the waffle wrapped around the mold until it's completely cooled, then store upright in a glass while you make the other cones.
-
10
Repeat the heating and rolling process with the remaining batter (you should be able to make approximately eight cones with one batch of batter). Once all the cones are cooled, use them immediately or store them in an airtight container at room temperature for about one month for maximum freshness.

Tips & Warnings
Plastic cone-shaped molds are available at cooking or restaurant supply stores, or you can use a piece of cardboard cut into a cone and wrapped in aluminum foil.
The waffle must be shaped immediately or it will crack, so wear gloves or use a cloth if it's too hot to handle easily.
