Cosmetology is the study of beauty products and treatments, such as hair and skin care. Oftentimes a cosmetologist will work at a high end salon where they cut an individual's hair. This is generally the main focus, however you will have knowledge about skin products and what will promote healthy skin and hair with your particular skin or hair type. However, you will not be able to simply walk into a salon and declare yourself a cosmetologist. For this you will need to go through extensive training.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Enroll in a cosmetology school. There are many large schools throughout the country. These schools will last about a year and you will learn skin and hair type, what chemicals are in what products and what effects these different chemicals will have on your skin and hair. In addition you will learn how to cut and style hair.

  2. Step 2

Practice what you are learning. Most cosmetology schools will have a hair salon inside, where outside individuals can come for their hair cut. You will style and cut their hair, under the supervision of an on floor instructor.

  3. Step 3

Pass your written tests and attend your classes every day, just like you would for a college or university. These classes will typically last all day (9-5), but again will only last anywhere from 8 to 12 months.

  4. Step 4

Perform your final cut for your instructor. This will require you to bring in an individual (typically a friend or family member), and cut and style her hair in front of the instructor, without any supervision. You will normally be graded on technique, time and following the instructions of your client. If you pass this, as well as your other written exams, you will be awarded a degree in cosmetology.

  5. Step 5

Apply for a job at a salon. You will now stand above most of the other individuals applying for a job because your are a certified cosmetologist
