So most people know hominy is some sort of corn. Many people think that hominy only comes out of a can. They don't realize it can be made at home from corn. Hominy is actually the boiled insides of corn, without the husk. A timely process, yet not to difficult to master.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 cups of shelled white corn
  • 4 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 5 to 6 quarts of cold water
  1. Step 1

Shell and wash the white corn.

  2. Step 2

Put the 5 to 6 quarts of cold water in a clean cooler.

  3. Step 3

Add the corn to the water and allow it to soak for several hours.

  4. Step 4

Transfer to a large cooking pot and add the soda.

  5. Step 5

Bring the corn to a full, rolling boil on medium heat.

  6. Step 6

Reduce the heat to the point that the water is barely boiling.

  7. Step 7

Cook until the corn is tender. This will take a long time, possibly all day. The corn husk will begin to loosen.

  8. Step 8

Remove from heat and drain the water.

  9. Step 9

Rinse off the corn and gently rub the corn, making the husk fall off.

  10. Step 10

Separate the insides from the husk. The insides is what makes the hominy.

  11. Step 11

Rinse the hominy many times, and now it's ready to be used.
