It happens to all pets at some point, even if they never go outside. Fleas find a way in to your home and on to your furry babies unless you are taking precautions to prevent them. Don't panic! You can give your pet some temporary relief now if you have to wait to get proper treatment from the vet.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start by treating the problem spots in your home like carpets, furniture and rugs. If you have children then treating their stuffed animals is recommended as well. How to treat you ask? Simple! Mix some salt with water in a spray bottle. The strength of your solution should be based upon how severe the flea problem is. Minimal infestation may only require a few tablespoons of salt where as a heavy infestation might call for a mixture of water fully saturated with salt.

  2. Step 2

Now all you need to do is spray those trouble areas fully(enough to feel lightly damp).

  3. Step 3

Let sit until completely dry. You will begin to see the salt on the surfaces of everything as it dries.

  4. Step 4

While you're waiting for things to dry this is the time to give your pet some much needed relief from all that itching. Run your pets bath water as normal and lather them with Dawn dish washing liquid. Let lather sit for 5 minutes before rinsing. While rinsing you can pick off any immobile fleas you see on your pet.

You can repeat this procedure twice per week until you get your pet in to the vet for proper flea treatment and treat your home with a stronger flea formula.

  5. Step 5

If the dish washing liquid starts to dry your pets skin out you can give them a bath once per week in a moisturizing shampoo to help restore balance.

  6. Step 6

Now that the carpet and furniture have dried vacuum everything over a couple of times to pick up salt and dead fleas. Dispose of vacuum bag or clean out canister immediately!
