Things You'll Need:
- Business plan
- General office supplies
-
Step 1
Decide what you love. The whole idea of having your own work at home business is to do what you love instead of what you detest. Sit down in a quiet spot and make a list of the ten things you most enjoy doing. Include hobbies like crafting, cooking, woodworking or even making fishing flies. Write work or jobs on your list that you have experience in and some work that you have never done, but would like to try.
-
Step 2
Read your list and cross off five ideas. Choose things that you know you will not stick with, will not make enough money to support itself (and you) or that would not be feasible to sell in your local community. For example, if you live in a large city, the locals may not have a need for fishing flies; however if you live in a small town next to a large stream, your work at home fly fishing business would likely flourish.
-
Step 3
Reduce the options on your list once more by repeating step 2, except this time instead of crossing off five ideas, cross off four. If you are down to just a couple of work at home business ideas on your list and are struggling to pick just one, take a new sheet of paper out and list the pros and cons of each idea. Think about the amount of hours you will need to work in order to make the amount of money you need to make, the time it takes to produce each item you will be selling or the services you will provide.
-
Step 4
Expand your idea. If you chose crafting as your work at home business, ask yourself the following questions. What sort of crafting? Scrap booking, sewing and woodworking are popular craft businesses. Where will you buy the materials you need for products? You need a wholesale supplier for your goods in order to buy items at the lowest cost. Where will you sell your products? The internet, craft shows, swap shows and fairs are a great place for work at home businesses to get their names out and products sold.
