This article is about interpreting the fourth card of the major arcana of the tarot, the number three, the Empress.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your imagination
  • Rider Waite Deck
  • A notebook
  1. Step 1

    Pull the card out of the deck and look at it. Take a deep breath and meditate on the image. Use your imagination and think about who this person is and what he has to offer you. What do you see? Write the images that catch your eye in your notebook

  2. Step 2

    The Empress represents your physical mother or a mother figure. Her stomach is full because she is pregnant and ready to give you life. She is the essence of love and abundance. Her power is in creation. There is always enough on this earth to create anything you imagine. The Empress is here to remind you of that.

  3. Step 3

    She wears a gown decorated with pomegranates which represent her unity with the divine. On her head a crown of stars which shows that she is the Queen of the heavens. The shield at her feet is from Venus, Goddess of Love. With this love comes protection. You need love and attention for anything to grow. The waterfall represents the flow of emotions and the wheat at her feet is nourishment that grows on earth.

  4. Step 4

    This card in interpreted in two ways. First, remember that the Empress is womb in which your ideas grow and come to life through birth. If reading for a male or female, she can represents his/her real mother. Look at the cards around for more detail about circumstances around that person. This card also can indicate an actual pregnancy.
    Second, when you see this card in a reading, you know that the querent is very creative. The Empress rules the creative arts. Advise them that a time of abundance is near if it has not already arrived. Let the querent know they need to take advantage of this creative energy.

Tips & Warnings
  • This card also represents being in love. If it falls with the 2 of cups or any other well meaning suit of cups you can be sure the person is in the middle of a full blown love affair.
  • Also represents pregnancy if falling with the 3 of cups.
