How to Make a Fringe Purse
Many people get stuck on a project before they even start because the patterns have too many rules and specific guidelines. But making a fringe or raggedy purse has very few restrictions. A fringe purse can be made with any fabric you have in your scrap basket and you get to determine the size by what materials you have. The lining is worked into the construction, allowing you to quickly and easily create a purse or two in a few hours.
Things You'll Need

- Iron (optional)
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- Masking tape
- Sewing machine

1
Measure and cut six pieces of fabric 12-inches square. If your fabric is small, piece several scraps together. When the pieces are cut to size, open the seams and iron them flat.
-
2
Stack the squares together. Place the first two squares right side down, one square right side up, one right side down and the last two right side up. If you would like your fringe purse to have a curved bottom, round the corners on one side of the stacked squares. Pin the pieces together on two sides and the bottom.

Measure 2 inches from the right hand side of your sewing machine's needle and place a piece of masking tape to mark the measurement. Sew the purse's three pinned sidesusing the masking tape to guide a 2-inch seam allowance. Cut 1/4-inch wide fringe from the purse's sewn edge toward the seam line on all three sewn sides. Depending on the texture and type of fabric used, the fringe may become raggedy through time, or you could wash and dry it.

Open the purse's top with three squares on each side. Pin the three layers together. Sew the three layers together around the purse's opening using the 2-inch seam allowance mark. Cut 1/4-inch wide fringe around the top opening of the purse on each side.

5
Cut 1 yard of 1/4-inch diameter cording in half for the purse handles. Tie an overhand knot on the ends of each handle. Lay the fringe purse on a work surface. Pin one end of a handle to the sewn edge on the top opening and 2 inches from the sewn side seam. Pin the other end of the handle in the same way, but 2 inches from the other side seam. Top stitch the handle to the purse. Turn the fringe purse over and repeat with the other handle.
