Pergo flooring can be installed without Moisturbloc provided the flooring is being installed onto a wooden subfloor. Moisturbloc is the brand name of a waterproof barrier manufactured by the Pergo company. A waterproof barrier is only necessary when installing Pergo flooring over a concrete subfloor because the concrete may emit water vapors that can damage the flooring over time and significantly reduce the life span of the floor.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine if the subfloor is wood or concrete. This may involve prying up a corner of the existing floor to look beneath it. Pergo flooring can be installed directly over existing tile or vinyl flooring, but it is important to know what the subfloor consists of. Water vapor from a concrete subfloor can still damage the Pergo flooring through the existing floor if a waterproof barrier is not used. Once you have determined that the subfloor is not concrete, installation without Moisturbloc can continue.

  2. Step 2

Clean the floor thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris, and allow it to dry completely before beginning installation.

  3. Step 3

Set the first board in one corner of the room approximately 1/4-inch away from each wall. This space is important to allow for expansion of the boards, which may occur due to humidity. Set the next board firmly in place against the first board so that they fit together tightly. Continue to line up the flooring until you have completed the first row. A miter saw will be necessary to cut the last board in the row so that it fits.

  4. Step 4

Start the second row on the side of the room where the first row ended. This will allow you to stagger the joints of the planks easily. Push each plank firmly against the planks you have already installed, and continue to install one row at a time, cutting boards as necessary, until the entire floor has been covered.

  5. Step 5

Install decorative base trim to hide the 1/4-inch inch gap between the Pergo flooring and the walls.
