Instructions

    • 1

Cut a headline from your local newspaper, but don't read the article. Invent a story to go along with the headline. Make it as inventive and outlandish as possible.

    • 2

Invite a few friends over and ask each participant to write an introduction to a story. The introductions are then passed to the person on the right, who continues the story. After a few times around the table, everybody writes an ending and the story is read out loud. To put a different spin on this activity, participants write a paragraph without reading the previous paragraphs.

    • 3

Choose a familiar fairy tale and write a new ending for it. Forget about the traditional "happily ever after" story and turn the fairy tale into a mystery, a science fiction story, a comedy, a western or anything you like.

    • 4

Cut pictures of five people out of a glossy magazine. Write a 300- to 400-word profile about each person. If you want to take it one step further, turn the people into characters and write a soap opera scene.

    • 5

Write a story with 26 sentences. Begin the first sentence with 'A,' the second sentence with 'B' and the third sentence with 'C,' continuing through the alphabet.
