How to Fix a VW Wiper Motor

The wiper motor in many Volkswagens today has a modern design, different from those found in older Volkswagens, and may require replacement when the motor burns out. Fixing it can be done one of two ways.

      Check the fuse panel to make sure that the fuse for the wiper motor is not blown. Open the fuse box and shine a flashlight on the end of the fuse for the wiper motor. If it is blown, you'll need to pull out the fuse and replace it with a new fuse. If it is not blown then you may need to replace the wiper motor.

      Turn on the wiper blades. If you hear an abnormal sound or if the wiper function is abnormal or the blades simply do not move, turn off the motor. You need to replace the wiper motor.

      Pull the wiper blades away from the windshield until the arms lock in a vertical position.

      Remove the bolts securing the wiper arm to the windshield cowl.

      Pull the wiper blades off the cowl.

      Remove the four screws holding the cowl in place.

      Pull off the cowl.

      Remove the electrical connection running to the wiper motor.

      Remove the bolts holding the wiper motor in place and remove the motor.

      Install a new motor and reassemble the wiper blade assembly.
