How to Sign Onto AOL

AOL in an earlier incarnation was called America Online and was one of the first consumer-oriented online communities. Along with CompuServe -- which AOL bought and killed off -- and Prodigy, AOL introduced the world to the Web. AOL is still around and is best known now for e-mail and instant messaging. A free AOL account gives you access to these services.

Instructions

    • 1

Browse the different types of accounts at the AOL Web site (see below). There are accounts that include Internet service and that offer e-mail and instant messaging but don't include live support or Internet service.

    • 2

Select the "Sign Up Now" button adjacent to the "Free AOL" option and enter your name and desired e-mail address. The system will prompt you with options if the requested e-mail address is not available. Choose a password, enter a security question, your zip code and birthday. Verify the registration by entering the Captcha image. Enter the characters without spaces. Agree to the terms of service and press the Submit button.

    • 3

Press the green "Go to the Inbox" button. The confirmation screen after Step 2 will confirm your e-mail address and password. It will give you the option to make AOL your home page. AOL Easy Transfer will be selected as a default. Keep that checked if you want to configure AOL to get your old e-mail.

    • 4

Click on "Start Using AOL Mail" on the next screen and the mail interface page will display. You can see your inbox here. There also is a compose button for writing e-mail. If you selected Easy Transfer in Step 3, a second Web page will display in a new browser window and give you the opportunity to transfer your address book and e-mail history.

    • 5

Click on the inbox and open the "Welcome to your New E-Mail Account" message. In the message there will be an opportunity to get AOL Instant Messaging. AIM, as it's called, will give you chat, including video chat. There will be an "Install AIM 6.8" button in the e-mail. Press that button and follow the prompts.
