How to Make Homemade Costumes for Kids

A costume is a temporary disguise donned for an occasion such as Halloween. It's also a fun way to become someone else. Many kids naturally love dressing up. If you don't see a costume that you like in the stores, you can easily make one at home for your child.

Instructions

Decide on a design. Ask your child what he likes. Popular choices include cartoon characters, uniformed professions such police officers and fireman, and fantasy creatures such as unicorns and fairies. Let your kid help you make the costume. He can color details, cut out materials and do very basic sewing. Also, if something doesn't look right, he can tell you.

Turn any young man into a superman. Top a blue shirt with a homemade superman sign made from cardboard. The sign should have a large letter S with a yellow background. Add a pair of blue pants worn with a pair of red underwear and a yellow belt. Sew a long, trailing red piece of fabric to the outside of the blue shirt to create a cape for the costume. Spray paint an old pair of boots red to complete the look.

Make a fireman costume. Purchase a fireman's hat and a black raincoat. Wrap bright yellow strips of tape around the arms and middle of the raincoat. Wrap additional strips of yellow tape around a pair of black pants and on the front of a pair of black boots.

Turn any young lady into a ballerina. Purchase or use a pair of ballerina shoes that you already have in the house. She can wear the shoes over pink tights, a leotard and a tutu. Sew pink crystals into the tutu and beads on the top of the tutu. Gather her hair into a bun. Wrap a pink ribbon around the bun for a finished ballet look.

Use your son's or daughter's favorite sport as inspiration for a really cool costume. Create a life-size soccer ball for your kid to wear. Start with a large piece of brown paper. Wrap the brown paper around your child's torso to fit. Take it off. Paint or color it with black and white soccer hexagons to resemble a soccer ball. Place the result back on your child. Fill with balloons or wadded paper. Finish with soccer shoes and black stockings.
