How to Make Pressed Flowers

Pressing flowers has long been a favorite activity of those who enjoy arts and crafts. The process involves letting the flowers dry in a press that keeps them out of any light and free from moisture. The press flattens the flowers, and the drying under pressure brings out different colors, making pressed flowers perfect for use in many craft projects. Anyone can enjoy pressing flowers because it takes very few materials, and even those just learning can get some beautiful results.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick the flowers you wish to press when they are at their healthiest. Allow them to dry out so that there is no noticeable moisture on them. Brush off any dirt and dying leaves.

    • 2

Make a mix of 1 part water to 1 part fabric softener and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the flower and allow it to air-dry thoroughly. The glycerin in the fabric softener will help in preserving the flower.

    • 3

Lay the flower in a flower press or between the pages of a thick book. If you are using a book, place two plain, white pieces of paper in between the pages also to protect the book. Arrange the flower so that it is spread out and not overlapping itself.

    • 4

Tighten down the press or close the book and put some weight on it, and wait patiently for approximately two weeks before opening.

    • 5

Place the book and flower in the microwave and cook for 30 seconds at a time if you need the flowers immediately and can't wait two weeks. Check the flower each time you cook it until you are happy with the results. Special microwave flower presses are also available for purchase. They are constructed without any metal so that they are safe for microwave use.
