How to Protect Your Ears

There isn't any visible evidence of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL.) Effects are realized after the damage is done, yet it's completely preventable. Tools are available to protect your ears. They include various types of hearing protectors (ear plugs) and also government-mandated noise level controls in the work-place called engineering-controls. Choosing hearing protectors is easy.

Instructions

1. Figure out your exposure levels and if you need ear protection. That includes the noise level in (dB) and the protection level you already have. An average noise level at 85 dB over an eight-hour period triggers federal government regulation where your employer is required to offer you and train you in hearing protection. Radio Shack sell a cheap decibel meter you can use to check noise levels unscientifically.

2. Determine environmental concerns. Climate is a consideration. Earplugs can be uncomfortable in hot climates. Earmuffs are good in cold climates because they also protect from weather. If you have storage available at work, reusable earplugs can be an option. Single use earplugs are good for hygiene.

3. Consider the types of noise. For constant noise, use any type of earplug---single or multiple-use. For intermittent noise, earplugs with bands are good for easy on and off. Impact-type noise can be managed with electronic earmuffs. They limit ambient sound and revert to passive protection at unsafe levels.

4. Know your communication requirements. Make sure you can communicate with your co-workers, for example. You shouldn't over-protect.

5. Choose your hearing protector. Earplugs come in single, multiple-use and banded. Earmuffs can be headband, cap-mounted, neck-banded or folding. Added extras can include AM/FM radios and high visibility coloring, for example.

• Protection levels run from a noise reduction rating (NRR) of 18 NRR to 33 NRR and will be marked on the packaging.
