How To Build A Dream Kitchen
-
1
Do your research. Look at kitchens in model homes, at home shows, and look at photos of kitchens in magazines. Find out what you like best.
-
2
Write down your wish list. Make a list of everything you want in your dream kitchen. Include type of cabinets, what kind of countertops you want, if you want an island or an eat-in area, what kind of flooring, what kind of appliances, what kind of sink and faucets, lighting, how many windows and any other special features.
-
3
Set a budget. Visit home stores, appliance stores and kitchen stores and price the items on your wish list. Write down the prices. When you get home, make changes to your wish list so it conforms with your budget.
-
4
Get a large piece of white paper, or a piece of paper with little squares on it. Use a pencil with an eraser and draw your kitchen the way you want it to be. Decide on a shape and size. Draw in the windows, the cabinet areas, the eating area, the island, the sink, the appliances and anything else you want in your kitchen. Design your kitchen on paper.
-
5
Apply for financing if you need to. Apply at your bank, or home mortgage company.
-
6
Find a general contractor. Get references from friends or from people who have had construction done on their home. Look in the yellow pages. Wherever you find your contractor, make sure to get references.
-
7
Prepare to do it yourself, if that is your plan. Get references for any subcontractors you may need.

Tips & Warnings
Apply for a loan online, and negotiate your terms when numerous lenders offer their services. Watch for sales on appliances or other items you need for your dream kitchen. Don't be shy about asking for a lower price when you are buying in bulk.
