A squared up horse indicates a balanced horse, and a horse that has been cared for and trained by it's owner.

You see the importance of a horse that stops squarely in showmanship, halter, and dressage, but teaching your horse to stand squarely whenever stopped is just good practice in general.

This article will give you pointers on how to easily and safely teach your horse to stop square.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • halter
  • leadrope
  1. Step 1

    Tip #1
work with your horse so that when you ask your horse to go forward and his head is tilted to the right, that his left front should move forward.

The same is for the left, except if you tilt his head to the left (towards you) and forward, the right front will move forward.

it is these small steps that will help you achieve your final goal!

  2. Step 2

    Now,
that said- you can move the hind feet the same as the front.
whenever you attempt to set up your horse in this manner- always set the hind feet first, than the fronts.

another tip is to pick up each of your horses feet- hind first of coarse, and set them down squarely.

then praise your horse each time he keeps his feet in place.

  3. Step 3

The ultimate way to teach your horse to stop square is to ALWAYS and CONSISTENTLY set your horse up whenever you stop. this means whenever putting him in cross ties, while turning him out, etc.
