Steak is delicious grilled on an open flame, cooked in a broiler -- even pan fried on the stove top.

But if you want to take a steak to a new level -- a level higher than bottled steak sauce, you have to try one or more of these gormet toppings.

When I broil steaks, I usually sprinkle them with a little salt and pepper after they are done browning. However, you can leave off that seasoning when you top your steaks with one of these toppings.

Blue Cheese topping, mushroom-onion topping, mustard butter or sesame butter -- these toppings will not compromise the steak flavor but enhance it.

Spread gormet toppings on steaks just as soon as they're removed from the broiler or grill. Each of the following topping recipes serves four.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Blue Cheese Topping

Mix 2 ounces of crumbled blue cheese and a 1/2 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce.

  2. Step 2

    Mushroom-Onion Topping

Cook and stir 1 medium onion, sliced, 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms, 1/2 teaspoons of salt and 2 cloves of crushed garlic, in 2 Tablespoons of butter until onion is tender.

  3. Step 3

    Mustard Butter

Mix 1/4 cup of butter, softened, 1 Tablespoon of snipped parsley, 2 Tablespoons of prepared mustard and 1/4 teaspoon onion salt.

  4. Step 4

    Sesame Butter

Beat 1/4 cup of butter, softened, 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic salt. Stir in 1 Tablespoon of toasted sesame seed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Gormet toppings can be used on other protein besides steak so experiment away.
