Rabbits can be very sensitive animals. However, when they get fleas it is just as important to be sure you treat them immediately. I am going to explain the ONLY SAFE WAY to treat a rabbit for fleas. I have consulted with multiple Veterinarians, done extensive research, and read multiple studies that suggest there is only one truly safe and tested way to treat a rabbit for fleas, and keep them gone.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A vacuum.
  • 2 tubes of Advantage Flea Treatment by Bayer for cats and Kittens UNDER 9 pounds.
  • Cedar bedding (optional).
  1. Step 1

    CLEAN.
Vacuum the carpets in the entire house and dump the bag or container in a trash can outside.

  2. Step 2

    ADVANTAGE.
At most large pet stores, or from your Veterinarian, purchase at least 2 tubes (they are usually sold in 4) of the ONLY TESTED AND PROVEN SAFE flea treatment for rabbits. This is Advantage Flea Treatment For Cats and Kittens UNDER 9 pound and over 8 week of age. Not the dog variety and not any other brand. There are a list of issues with other treatments that can include but are not limited to, skin irritation, seizure, and even death of your bunny. To apply place the rabbit in your lap wrapped in a towel so it does not move, you want to precisely control where the treatment is applied. Unscrew the cap and puncture the tube's opening with the other side of the cap. Push the rabbit's ears forward and spread the hair on the neck. Squeeze the contents of the tube onto the neck and almost to the top of the shoulder blades. Do not get any chemical anywhere near where the rabbit could lick or anywhere near the eyes. Place the rabbit back in the cage. This is an excellent time for a treat. Continue to check the rabbit for any signs of distress or skin irritation where the product was applied. If irritation occurs, which is rare, wash the area thoroughly and contact your Veterinarian.

  3. Step 3

    CLEAN AGAIN.
24 hours after the treatment, vacuum and empty the bag outside again. Also, clean and replace the rabbit's bedding materials.

  4. Step 4

    REPEAT ADVANTAGE APPLICATION.
Complete step number 2 again in four weeks from the first application.

  5. Step 5

    BOMBING.
If you have a full flea infestation, you may need to bomb your home. While doing this, all pets and people should not be in the home. Read the directions carefully. I have my pets do a "sleep over" at a friends house for up to 2 days afterward. I also vacuum their room and clean all surfaces they come into contact with.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prevention is key.
  • Treat all of your pets at the same time.
  • Use caution when using any chemical, wash any skin it contacts.
  • Consult with your Veterinarian before treating your animal for anything, especially if the animal has any conditions or is on any medication.
