Setting up a homework center will help your child get into the routine of doing homework. End the days of trying to get everyone in gear and create a homework center that can be put into action every day. Getting started on homework is half the battle. Once your child opens up their homework and becomes engaged, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Creating a homework center will save everyone frustration and will create a proactive and portable study area for your child.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tri-fold display board
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Glue dots
  • Magnet strips
  • Plastic baggies
  • Folder pockets
  • School supplies
  • Calendar
  • Planner
  1. Step 1

Lay your tri-fold display board on your work surface.

  2. Step 2

Lay out your school supplies. Place the heavier items, such as scissors, and a small stapler toward the bottom of the display board. Make sure you can close your tri-fold display board.

  3. Step 3

Determine where you would like each item placed. Use a ruler and pencil to mark each location.

  4. Step 4

Attach the magnet strips and baggies with glue dots.

  5. Step 5

Attach folder pockets with glue dots. Use several glue dots for the pockets so they are sturdy enough to hold a planner or other items. Consider adding a pocket for each subject your child has.

  6. Step 6

Customize your homework center. Add a school picture and other personalized items to each tri-fold display board.

  7. Step 7

Set aside an area where your child can open their homework center and go to work. Everything should be at their fingertips, from erasers to rulers.

  8. Step 8

Work with your child to add any other school items they may need. Your child will appreciate your support and will feel less overwhelmed about homework assignments.

  9. Step 9

Go over assignments and other activities on your child’s calendar. Teach them to be responsible for their homework and activities.

  10. Step 10

Take a picture of your child’s Homework center. Send the picture to school with your child, to show the teacher.
