Kendo is generally referred to as the way of the sword in martial arts because the sword must be mastered by the fighter. This is a very demanding form of martial art and requires many years of repetitive practice for the average martial artist student to become proficient in Kendo. Use these ideas to help you train to become a Kendo martial artist.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a Kendo club (Dojo) that is part of a regional association affiliated with the All United States Kendo Federation. This federation main focus is on kendo martial art exam rules and competitions. Join one of the affiliated clubs to train in Kendo martial arts. Affiliation by the club ensures that the Kendo practice, techniques and rules adhere to a uniform standard.

  2. Step 2

Develop discipline for Kendo practice and maintain a disposition for hard mental and physical training. The early training is focused on repetitive footwork coordination, swordsmanship techniques and different Kendo postures. Kendo students must go through progressive training levels before using the swords. The practice is done with another student of the same skill level.

  3. Step 3

Learn the Kendo Kata or Kendo rules. The rules are martial art motions and strikes that are fixed and done repetitively to illustrate specific concepts. These rules have been approved by the All Kendo Federations. The rules are practiced with a wooden or bamboo sword and with another student.

  4. Step 4

Become proficient in offensive and defensive Kendo martial art techniques. Offensive techniques are strikes that you initiate against your opponent. Defensive techniques are responses to your opponent attacks. There a number of very specific offense and defense techniques that the Kendo students is taught to execute at the Dojo. Learning these techniques is a matter of repetitive practice and discipline.

  5. Step 5

Continue Kendo training for many years to pass martial art promotion exams. These exams allow the students to achieve higher rank levels in Kendo. Kendo students can use different method to achieve higher proficiency. Attend seminars; watch Kendo videos, pursuit membership in Kendo online communities, participate in competitions and read the Kendo Physical Education book published by the All Japanese Kendo Federation.
