It's the Halloween season and you want to choose a pumpkin for carving or just to use for a decoration. I have a few tips that will help you with choosing the right pumpkin for you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pumpkin
  1. Step 1

First you will need to know what carving design you will be using to know the size you need. If you are going to need a short, round pumpkin to complete the pattern, or a long more slender pumpkin to create the look you are going for. You can find pumpkin carving patterns on line and they have pattern books at Walmart, Kmart, etc.

  2. Step 2

You want to look for fresh and firm pumpkins make sure and check for any blemishes and soft spots. Color is of your choosing since there are various shades of orange pumpkins. If you are selecting pumpkins for a grouping you want to keep this in mind by choosing all the pumpkins in the same color range.

  3. Step 3

Select smooth skinned pumpkins which will be easier to carve, but of course if you pattern is more spooky you may want to go with one with a rougher skin.

  4. Step 4

Be sure your pumpkin can sit up straight. A round bottom that keeps falling over or leaning to the side will not give you the results you need. Try sitting your pumpkin on a flat surface before purchasing and check out how straight it sits.

Tips & Warnings
  • Purchase your pumpkin early and keep in a cool dry place until you are ready to carve.
  • You may want to use a colored glow stick for something different for lighting your carved pumpkin.
