Instructions

    • 1

Sow the seeds in spring or fall. The plants prefer light shade to sun but they are not terribly fussy. I even have seen them grown in full shade on the north side of a hill. Scatter the seeds in the area you want the plants. Make sure you sow more than you want because some of the seeds will likely be eaten by the birds and the squirrels. If you prefer to have more control where the plants are, the seeds can be started inside by scattering them on some seed starting mix in a container and covering with 1/8" soil.

    • 2

Fragrant flowers appear in may-June and can be magenta or white. They are quite attractive. They soon start turning into the round seed pods. In the fall, the seed pods start turning translucent and eventually turn brittle.

    • 3

When the pods turn crisp and translucent, cut the stems and bring in to dry. You may need to rub the outside cover and the seeds off. Be careful not to damage the inside membrane. The stems with the membranes are used in crafts and in Fall decorations. Make sure you sow some more of the seeds because the plants are biennials which means they die the second year after going to seed. If you allow a few of them to sow, you will have plants every year.

Tips & Warnings

  • plant attracts bees, butterflies and birds

  • For plants every year, allow to self sow or sow some of the seeds every year

  • Hardy from USDA zone 4a - 8b

  • If allowed, self sows freely. Is not a severe problem.

  • not that good inside - although I have seen it done
