The most important thing to remember when dieting is that you must stay hydrated. Be sure to drink between 8 and 10 glasses of water each day. Not only will water keep you hydrated, but it will help flush fats and impurities out of your body. Drinking adequate amounts of water will also help boost your metabolism and help you lose more pounds. Often, people mistake thirst for hunger, so if you have urges to eat between meals, then try a glass of water first and see if this soothes your hunger urge.

Almost all fresh vegetables are low in calories, rich in vitamins and nutrients, and some will burn more calories during digestion than they actually contain. You might have heard these referred to as "negative calorie foods" in other diets. Many other vegetables have such few calories that you would have to eat enormous amounts just to equal the same calories you would consume if eating a small burger. Lettuce, cabbage, carrots, onion, tomatoes, cucumer, radishes, celery, zucchini, and yellow squash are just a few of the vegetables that are high volume, low calorie foods. Try eating at least one or two servings of raw, fresh vegetables at the beginning of each meal. Many vegetables are also high in fiber which will keep you feeling fuller throughout the day.

Many fruits are also very low in calories. There are even zero calorie and negative calorie fruits such as oranges, blueberries, lemon, lime, peaches, and pineapple based on the same principle as above. Research suggests that these fruits use up more calories during chewing and digestion than they contain. Other great fruits that are high in volume and low in calories are melons, apples, tomatoes (technically they are a fruit, not a vegetable), kiwi fruit, star fruit, papaya, mango, grapes, muskadines, blackberries, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, plums, canteloupe, tangerines, and clementines. Most people should eat 4 or 5 servings of fruit each day. Eat fruits with each meal and as snacks in between meals, especially if you are craving sweets. Most fruits also contain vitamins, minerals, and fiber that are important keys to good health and weight loss.

In addition to eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the day, you can also make broth-based soups with fresh vegetables and beans. You can also add boneless, skinless chicken or boiled seafood such as shrimp and scallops to add protein. You might also enjoy substituting grilled or baked tofu for chicken in recipes. Try to avoid high calorie, high fat meats such as fatty beef, sausage, and bacon. Foods high in protein will help you build muscle and burn more calories, but be very careful when selecting protein items. Be sure to read the nutrition labels to be sure that you aren't consuming unnecessary fats and extra calories.
