The Ambrose is a team golf tournament format that is good for allowing players of different ability levels to play together. It is also known for promoting teamwork and cooperation, and speeding up the game because the best shots are played, eliminating the need for spending a long time looking for lost balls or hitting out of poor lies. The Ambrose differs from other scramble formats in that it accounts for player handicaps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Golf team of 2 to 4 members
  1. Step 1

Select one player that will serve as captain and make the final decision on what shots will be played.

  2. Step 2

Have each player hit their tee shot. The captain will then decide which is the "best" ball of those hit. All the other players will pick up their balls and then hit second shots from the location of the selected best ball.

  3. Step 3

Repeat the process of Step 2 for all the shots on the hole, including putts.

  4. Step 4

Record one score for the team for the hole, which is the sum of the best shots on the hole.

  5. Step 5

Adjust the score for handicaps of teams of four players by taking the combined handicap of all players and dividing by 8 to calculate the team's handicap. Subtract the team handicap from the gross score of the team to get the net score. For teams of 3 players, divide the sum of handicaps by 6 before subtracting from the gross score, and for teams of 2 players, divide the sum of handicaps by 4.
