Acne is a collective word for skin blemishes, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, cysts and milia, that affects people of all ages. Acne is caused by sebum (oil) getting blocked in the skin's hair follicles and pores. Acne facials can treat and reduce acne, but salon facials are very expensive. You can prepare effective acne facials at home for a fraction of the cost with ingredients on hand in your kitchen: Oatmeal for skin exfoliation and oil absorption, basil to soothe infected acne and honey to kill bacteria and soften the skin.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/4 cup dry, plain oatmeal
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 2 tsp. dried basil
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • Paper towels
  • Clean, lint-free towel

Stir 2 tsp. of dried basil into 3/4 cup of boiling water and allow it to steep for 10 minutes or until water becomes lukewarm.

Add the dry oatmeal and honey to the basil water and mix thoroughly. The mixture will be sticky and pasty.

Apply the oatmeal facial liberally to your face and leave it on for 15 minutes. Avoid the eye area.

Remove the bulk of the oatmeal acne facial with a dampened paper towel and discard. Rinse your face completely with warm water.

Pat your skin dry with a clean, lint-free towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you feel the oatmeal facial is too sticky, mix in one tbsp. of plain yogurt to make it smoother. For a cooling effect on the skin, refrigerate the prepared oatmeal facial for 20 minutes before applying. Refrigerate any leftover facial mixture for up to three days.
  • Should the facial mixture get into your eyes, rinse immediately with warm water. If irritation persists, consult a physician.
