How to Make a Rose Boutonniere
Rose boutonnieres dress up a tuxedo with sophistication and class. Roses are ideal flowers for boutonnieres because they hold up well without direct access to water, they're a good size, and come in a wide array of colors. Use fresh or silk roses to make a boutonniere for your special occasion. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need

Instructions

1
Cut the stem of the rose with the floral shears, leaving about 1 inch. Remove all of the leaves and any thorns from the flower. Gently pluck any of the outer petals that show any brown or wilting.
-
2
Determine the front of the rose. Usually the front is where there are two petals that cross over each other with a larger petal framing the back. Pierce the base of the stem--just under the flower--with the florist wire. Push it halfway through, then bend it down and slightly twist the bottom pieces together.

3
Using the florist tape, wrap the entire length of the stem; go from the top of the stem where it meets the rose, all the way down the entire wire, which serves as an extended stem. Turn the flower as you wind the tape all the way down, overlapping the previous layer. Pull the tape tight to make it stick to itself. Tear or cut the tape with scissors once you reach the end of the stem.
-
4
Position the leaves behind the rose so they frame the flower. They should stick out about half an inch to an inch above the rose. Hold the stems of the greenery against the rose stem and wrap them together with florist tape using the same method as Step 3.
-
5
Add your filler flower, such as baby's breath or berries. Filler flowers can be tucked into the back or front of the arrangement--or both. Use only a small amount so you accent the rose but don't overpower it. Wrap the stems into the rose's stem, taping all the way down the stem as in steps 3 and 4.
-
6
Use the floral shears to cut the stem until the total length is roughly 3 inches long. Wrap sheer ribbon around the stem, ending with a small bow, if you desire. Cut the excess ribbon with scissors.
-
7
Bend the end of the stem under itself for a polished look. Stick one or two pins in the back of the boutonniere for securing to a tux or suit.
