If you're an economical sort of person, you may be wondering how you can register a domain name for free. It has become far simpler, compared to the past, to register a cheap domain, and there are many providers who will allow you to register your domain name for $10 or less. There is also a much greater number of affordable web hosts on the market, too, who will enable you to host a domain for a very reasonable price.

Depending on which web host and registrar you choose, however, you could be paying several hundreds of dollars annually. Therefore, if you are looking to get a new domain name for cheap, you should know how to cut costs when looking to purchase a new website. Read on to learn more about how to register a domain name for free.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research the different registrars on the internet to find out what sort of services and prices they offer. Many registrars may offer cheap domain name registration, but they may be deficient in features and customer support. So while you may want to register a domain name for free, you also want to make sure you are selecting a reputable provider.

  2. Step 2

Search online for discounts. Some registrars may offer a special coupon that will allow you to register your domain name for free. Keep in mind, however, that usually you will still be required to pay a monthly fee to keep a domain name active.

  3. Step 3

Opt for a lower level domain. Top level domains are different from lower level domains. A top level domain would be, for example, domain.com, whereas a lower level domain might be second.domain.com. As you can see, the lower level domain would be to the left of the top level domain (i.e. "second").

  4. Step 4

Select a web host or registrar who will allow you to register a domain name for free by allowing them to become the owner of the domain, rather than yourself. This means that they will have control over the domain, as well as where it is hosted. Later on, if you decide you want to become the owner of the domain, you can upgrade your account or pay a release-charge. There are drawbacks to this, however: they can end up charging you ridiculous exorbitant fees in order to take ownership of the domain name.
