Baked sweet potatoes are delicious and nutritious! Their yellow flesh is high in vitamins and fiber. Over the past several years, they have grown in popularity in restaurants and at home, too. Below are simple and quick steps to making baked sweet potatoes in the microwave at home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microwave
  • Water
  • Paper towel
  • Fork
  • Microwave safe dish
  • Sweet potato(s)
  • Knife
  • Butter or margarine
  1. Step 1

Wash sweet potato well with warm water and pat dry with paper towel.

  2. Step 2

Using fork, poke holes through the skin of the sweet potato. Poke several holes circumferentially on the potato. This allows the steam to escape as the potato cooks so that it doesn't explode in the microwave.

  3. Step 3

Place potato in microwave-safe baking dish (glass). Don't put metal in the microwave! It will spark and possibly start a fire!

  4. Step 4

Set microwave on high for 6-8 minutes depending on the size of the potato itself. The smaller ones cook in 6 minutes, larger in 8 minutes.

  5. Step 5

When cooking cycle is complete, using paper towel, give the potato a gentle squeeze. If it "gives" your potato is done. If it is still hard, cook for 1-2 minutes more until it softens.

  6. Step 6

When potato is cooked allow to sit for 3-5 minutes. This allows the potato to release a little of the steam and makes it easier to handle.

  7. Step 7

Using the knife, cut a slit in the top of the potato and add butter or margarine. Viola! You now have a baked sweet potato! Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Add 4 minutes cooking time for each additional potato.
  • A little cinnamon and brown sugar can be added in with the butter or margarine for added flavor.
  • See link under resources to view nutritional information
  • Be careful! The potatoes will be hot when you remove them from the microwave.
  • Do not use metal in the microwave-EVER!
