Need Your Brakes Changed? This Do-It-Yourself article provides you with easy step-by-step instructions. You'll learn how to change your front brakes yourself with ease.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jack, Jack Stands, Large C-Clamp, Depending on your vehicle, a socket set, torx or star bit.
  1. Step 1

To change your front brakes, you will need to first purchase the brake pads from your local auto parts store. You will also need to be sure that you have the right tools for the job. You will need a jack, jack stands, c-clamp, and depending on the vehicle, a socket set, torx or star bit for the brake caliper mounting bolts.

  2. Step 2

Now, set the parking brake and be sure to block the rear tires. Next, begin by loosening the lug nuts on both tires, but do not remove them.

  3. Step 3

Next, jack the car up and put it on jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and wheels.

  4. Step 4

Use the c-clamp to compress the caliper piston by placing the top of the c-clamp on the back of the caliper, and the bottom of the c-clamp on the brake pad closet to you. Compress until the inner brake pad touches the caliper housing.

  5. Step 5

Unbolt the caliper mounting bolts. Remove the old brake pads. Install the new brake pads.

  6. Step 6

Put the caliper back on the rotor and bolt into place. Now, put the wheels back on the vehicle. Next, you will need to hand tighten the lug nuts.

  7. Step 7

Lower the vehicle to the ground and finish tightening the lug nuts in a star pattern or every other one, so that they are even.

Tips & Warnings
  • Replace brakes one side at a time so that if you are unsure about something, you may look at the other side for reference.
