Step 1
Keep the temperature in your home at the same level at all times to avoid fluctuations that may use additional electricity and increase your electric bill. At least 77% or above is best to reduce electricity consumption. If you want a lower electric bill, you can keep the temperature even higher in the summer.
-
Step 2
Use your oven as little as possible. Barbecue on the grill, or cook in a toaster oven or crockpot whenever you can to decrease your electric bill. When using your oven, turn it off approximately 10 to 15 minutes before suggested cooking time completes. The existing oven heat will finish the cooking and reduce electric consumption.
-
Step 3
Clean any filters in your home that may make your appliances work harder. Air conditioners and clothes dryers in particular use more electricity when the filter is dirty. To save money on your electric bill, clean your filters at least once per week.
-
Step 4
Turn off lights, televisions, floor and ceiling fans when you leave the room. If you do not want to turn off your computer, at least turn off the monitor. In addition, set the settings on your computer to power save or hibernate to save additional energy and decrease your electric bill.
-
Step 5
Unplug appliances you do not use. Appliances use electricity even when they are not in use. In addition, replace any burnt out light bulbs. They also use a small amount of electricity that will increase the electric bill.
-
Step 6
Replace all of your lightbulbs with energy efficient bulbs. Update appliances to more energy efficient appliances as well. Unplug all phone or battery chargers when charging is complete to avoid using excess electricity. In addition, Set your water heater to medium settings to save on heating hot water. Electric costs will decrease if you make even minor changes in your electricity usage.
