Step 1
Determine your budget. A basic bike will cost a few hundred dollars, while high performance models can cost thousands. Typically the higher the price the higher the quality--allowing the mountain bike to withstand different riding conditions and types of terrain. However, do not go outside your budget once it is set. If the bike you want is out of your price range, consider the "next best" model or purchase the bike later when extra money has been saved.
-
Step 2
Determine where you will be using your mountain bike. Are your going to be using your new bike for leisurely rides or for going through mountainous terrain? Once you know where you are going to use your mountain bike, you can decide which features are needed and optional.
-
Step 3
Choose a retailer specializing in bicycle sales. There are specific advantages from buying from a specialized retailer rather than a generalized marketplace. Specialty stores offer bike fittings, trained assistance, professional advice, additional warranties, regular maintenance and repair work.
-
Step 4
Choose a bike frame. Most frames are aluminum or steel--but can also be made of titanium and carbon fiber. Typically beginners should choose an aluminum frame, which is also the least expensive and most durable. If you are unsure what frame is best for your experience, ability and use--ask a trained associate for assistance.
-
Step 5
Take a test ride. Any reputable store will allow you to test several models of mountain bikes before you make your final decision. Evaluate the advantages, disadvantages, likes and dislikes of each model before you make a final decision.
-
Step 6
Get the bike fitted. Mountain bikes come in a variety of sizes, and choosing the wrong size can cause your biking experience to be awkward an uncomfortable. A trained associate at a bike store can assist you with this process.
-
Step 7
Purchase your new mountain bike. If the model or size you want is not in stock, politely request the retailer place an order.
