How to Deal With a Dry Throat

A dry throat can be caused by many things. The onset of a sinus infection, dehydration and even acid reflux can irritate the tissues of the throat and cause excessive dryness in the throat and mouth. If you are experiencing this symptom, be sure to avoid areas heavy in tobacco smoke and drink lots of water. If your dry throat persists, it is a good idea to consult a medical professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Drink lots of water. A dry mouth and throat are usually signs of dehydration and can be greatly aided by drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water each day.

    • 2

Gargle with salt water. If your throat is swollen or red from irritation, try mixing warm water with a few teaspoons of salt and gargling for five minutes. Gargle several times in a row up to six times daily.

    • 3

Try a humidifier. If your throat dries while sleeping or in your home, add a humidifier to each room in the house. This will keep the air you breathe slightly moist and ease irritated tissues.

    • 4

Suck on throat lozenges. Over-the-counter lozenges often contain local anesthetic to numb irritated throat tissues. Sucking lozenges also triggers your saliva glands, which can help excessive dryness.

    • 5

Breathe through nose while sleeping. If you often wake up with a dry throat, try to breathe through your nose. If your nose is stuffed up, place your head over a pot of steaming water (preferably with peppermint tea) covered by a moist towel. This will help break up mucus and open your air passages.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have a humidifier, try placing a shallow pan of water in your room. This will keep moisture in the air through evaporation.

  • If symptom persists, visit a doctor.
