Instructions

    • 1

Encourage your child's natural curiosity. Let him or her know that it is OK to ask questions and to explore. By doing so, your child will not be inclined to let an unknown word pass undefined.

    • 2

Make bedtime reading a habit, and stick to it. Reading aloud is one of the best ways to build your child's vocabulary. Not only will they learn new words, they will learn their correct pronunciation and use in a sentence. Whenever your child comes across an unknown word, get her involved. Have your child sound out the word and attempt to use it in a sentence of her own.

    • 3

Converse with your child. This will enable him to use the new words he has been learning, as well as to pick up new words from you. Simply ask your child about his day, what he is doing or how he is feeling.

    • 4

Use any situation as a vocabulary-building opportunity. Make it a point to take your child some place new and interesting whenever circumstances allow. This could be trip to the museum, a park, a different part of your neighborhood, or even just to the store. Tell your child the word for something or someone whenever she asks, or take the initiative on your own.

Play vocabulary games. Your child will be all the more open to learning new words if the process is fun. Games, as well as rhymes and songs, are helpful in getting new words to stick in their heads. See references and resources for ideas.

Have your child keep a journal in which she can write anything she likes. A simple notebook will do. Your child will have to think of or look for the words to describe her day or what she thinks of it. This is also an excellent way to improve her writing and handwriting skills.
