How to Stop Web Filters

Web filters are often used by schools and work places to restrict Internet usage to only what is absolutely necessary for the environment. Parents and spouses often also use these filters to control what users of their PCs are allowed to do. While most usage of these filters are considered to be perfectly fine, occasionally filters block things that they really should not block.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" button and select "Control Panel".

    • 2

Double-click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon within "Control Panel".

    • 3

Select "Net Filter" and "Web Content Filter". Click "Remove" and then "Next" and finally "Finish". If these programs aren't in your Add/Remove programs folder, it's no big deal as that just means the web filter is blocking web sites from within "Internet Explorer" and you'll have to edit those settings in the next step.

    • 4

Close the "Add/Remove Programs" folder. Double-click "Internet Options" within "Control Panel". A box will then appear with Internet Explorer settings.

    • 5

Click the "Content" tab and then the "Enable" button to see what content is currently being blocked.

    • 6

Select each category and move the slider to the far left away from "None".

    • 7

Click "Apply" and then "OK" to apply the new filter settings. Click "OK" again to close the box.

    • 8

Restart your computer. Double-click "Internet Explorer" after the computer has restarted and you'll be able to access the previously blocked sites and content.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't mess with any of the other settings within Internet Explorer unless you are knowledgeable. As Internet Explorer has many settings that greatly impact your PC's ability to access certain web sites, it's easy to do something that really inhibits your ability to view certain things.

Ignorant... most modern companies and schools use Internet filters by way of a filter server onsite, or proxy server offsite. We also use standard group policies for users in active directory which disable most users from even seeing the control panel. Even if you are allowed to add/remove programs from your operating system. Removing the client would actually only make things WORSE not better. As the user policy tells the filter client what website access privileges you have. Removing the filter client on the machine would reduce your access to the lowest level and treat you as though you are an unidentified user on the network blocking almost everything instead of opening up the browser to view previously blocked content. The only way to trick a modern filter is to go to a proxy site that has no filter, and the websites for most of those are 99.9% blacklisted by most filters in use...
