Instructions

    • 1

Measure the baby you want to make the dress for. Write down the measurements, so you know how much fabric to get. The sewing pattern should specify what measurements are needed. If you cannot take exact measurements, find out the baby's weight and length. Factor in how soon you are making the dress, as the baby's size could change if you are planning to wait awhile.

    • 2

Purchase a sewing pattern for the dress you would like to make. Make sure the pattern applies to the sizes you are shopping for.

    • 3

Purchase the fabric you want to use for the dress. Ensure the baby does not have sensitivity to any fabric types. Choose a durable fabric that is breathable and can withstand washings and play, such as fabrics made from natural fibers.

    • 4

Review the pattern instructions and iron the fabric in preparation. Attach the pattern pieces to the fabric. You can pin the pattern pieces to the underside of the fabric and trace the pattern with tailor's chalk or a disappearing ink pen.

    • 5

Cut the pattern pieces from the fabric. Check the instructions as you may need multiple shapes cut for certain pattern pieces. Baste the pattern pieces together, adjusting for the measurements you took.

    • 6

Sew the dress together with the sewing machine or by hand, if you do not have access to a sewing machine. Make sure all seams are secure and there are no mistakes.

    • 7

Add any embellishments, Velcro or zippers that may be required.
