Things You'll Need:
- Line drawing or pattern
- Stencil material
- Craft knife
-
Step 1
Select the line drawing, pattern or alphabet clip art that is needed for the stencil. Patterns can be found in nature, books, coloring pages and online sites.
-
Step 2
Trace the pattern onto the stencil material. Add the detail of the item in dark pencil or ink.
-
Step 3
Place the material onto a self-healing mat. Use a sharp craft knife to carefully cut around the outline of the pattern that you have traced onto the stenciling material. X-acto knives or box cutters will work efficiently when cutting thicker cardboard, if you cut slowly.
-
Step 4
Cut out the areas of the material that will be the actual stencil design that is used to paint, chalk, emboss or draw. Be sure to cut all of the lines completely. Use a stylus or dull pencil lead to push small pieces out of the material.
-
Step 5
Write the name of the stencil design on to the Mylar or cardstock if you are going to use it over and over again.
