How to Make a Cross From a Palm
Every year millions of Christians flock to church on Palm Sunday, celebrated as the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. On the path in front of him, his followers are said to have laid down palm fronds. Chances are if you go to church on this Sunday, you will be given a palm frond folded into the shape of a cross, and the children in Sunday school will learn how to make one.

Making the Cross

1
Hold the palm frond horizontally. Fold it in the middle at a 90-degree angle so there is a perpendicular and horizontal portion to the left of the base of the perpendicular.
-
2
Fold the perpendicular away from you and around the fold made in step 1 until it is once again perpendicular. This will create a square shape on the back of the frond and a U shape on the front where the horizontal and perpendicular portions intersect.

3
Bring the horizontal strip over the front of perpendicular (the "U") and around, threading it through the square on the back that was created in the previous step. In doing so, a square will be created on the front of the frond as well. This step is essentially the same as step 2 except that you are folding the horizontal and tucking it through the square on the back.
-
4
Fold the perpendicular toward you and thread it down through the front square. This is the vertical portion of the cross, so pull the perpendicular through until the top is in correct proportion with the bottom; the square in front will be the intersection of the crossbar and the vertical section.
-
5
Fold the left strip away from you and on top of itself so it threads back through the back square. The left portion will form the left side of the crossbar. Continue pulling the horizontal section through the back square until the portion on the right is twice as long as the overlapping portion on the left.
-
6
Fold the horizontal strip, now on the right side of the perpendicular, away from you and back on itself until the end tucks into the back square. Make any final adjustments so the cross is proportional.
