Aromatherapy massage combines the relaxing and rejuvenating experience of a massage, with the benefits of aromatherapy. You can make your own homemade aromatherapy massage oils in various scents by combining an essential oil with a base oil such as olive oil, and enjoy a luxurious aromatherapy massage at home. Common aromatherapy scents are chamomile or lavender for calming, rosemary for energizing, or rose for uplifting your mood, but you can choose your favorite aromatherapy scent to make your own personal massage oil. You shouldn't apply essential oils directly to the skin, because they're too concentrated, but here's how you can use them in homemade massage oils.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Essential oil
  • Olive oil
  • Teaspoon and eyedropper
  • Small pump or spray bottle
  1. Step 1

Choose a scented essential oil in an aromatherapy scent that you want. Essential oils can be purchased at organic or natural health stores. You'll also need olive oil to dilute the essential oil, and a small bottle to hold the finished massage oil. A small pump or spray bottle makes it easier to apply the oil during a massage.

  2. Step 2

Combine the essential oil and the olive oil in the bottle, using eight drops of the essential oil for every six teaspoons of olive oil.

  3. Step 3

Shake the bottle gently to make sure the oils are mixed. Store your newly-made aromatherapy massage oil in a cool dark place between uses.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow the usual cautions for massage oils and aromatherapy oils. Do not use on very young children, pregnant women, or on wounds, bruises or rashes. Consult with a doctor if you have any doubts, since some of the essential oil may be absorbed through the skin during a massage.
