If you are planning on running a marathon, then the most important accessory you need is running shoes. How do you go about choosing the right shoes for your feet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First find out the type of arch on your feet i.e. are you flat footed or do you have a high arch. I seem to be flat footed.

One way to find the type of arch is to wet your feet and then place on an old newspaper.

  2. Step 2

Next look at your old running shoes and see the pronation i.e. is
your shoes worn out equally or is it worn out on the outside only. My
shoes are worn out on the outside.

  3. Step 3

Now you are ready to buy your shoes. Find a good running store. Read online if their staff have run marathons before. Take your old shoes when you go to the store. Also remember to wear your normal running socks.

  4. Step 4

At the store based on your arch and pronation, the staff may suggest different types of shoes. Try each one on. Don't look at the colors. Look for comfort.

  5. Step 5

    General rule of thumb is
    - Normal arch = normal pronation = Stability Shoes
    - Flat arch = overpronation = Motion Control Shoes
    - High arch = underpronation = Cushion Shoes

  6. Step 6

Once you have chosen a pair or two which you are most comfortable with, put them on and run round the block. After you choose the shoes ask the store if they have an exchange policy if you return the shoes within a month. This is so that you can try the shoe on for your long run and really make sure they work for you. Most of the good running stores allow you to change your shoes for a different pair.

  7. Step 7

Even though 2 pair of shoes are the same size and model, they would vary a little when you war them. So when you are replacing your shoes make sure to break them in before your race.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always buy shoes in the evening when the feet are swollen.
  • Buy running shoes which are at least one size bigger than your normal dress shoes.
  • More expensive shoes does not mean better shoes.
