Looking for a way to shorten URLs? Some URLs can be hundreds of characters long and a shorter URL is necessary when posting to sites like Twitter or Facebook, where there is a character limit that necessitates a shorter link. This leaves Twitter users, Facebook users and other internet enthusiasts looking for a way to make a URL shorter, without having to link to the website's homepage. These sites that shorten URLs work by creating a link through their website to the location of the long URL. So instead of visiting the page with the long URL directly, you are visiting the page with the long URL through a page on the URL shortening website. There is no difference in the actual experience of visiting the website with the longer URL and a vast majority of websites that shorten URLs are free to use. This article will explain how to shorten URLs for free using one of the many free URL shortening websites like TinyURL, SnipURL or ShortURL (see resources).

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet Access
  • A Long URL that You Want to Shorten
  1. Step 1

Visit the web page for which you'd like to shorten a URL and highlight the entire URL (the web address for the page).

  2. Step 2

Click "copy" under the web browser's "edit" menu (or use the key command CTRL+C) while the long URL is still highlighted.

  3. Step 3

Visit a free URL shortening website like TinyURL, SnipURL or ShortURL (see resources) - just a few of many free URL shortening services - and use your mouse to click in the box where you enter the original long URL. Depending on the site, the box will be labeled something like "Long URL" or "Create a Short URL."

  4. Step 4

Click on the web browser's "edit" menu and select "paste" (or use the key command CTRL+V) to paste the long URL into the box for URL shortening.

  5. Step 5

Generate the shorter URL by hitting the button to proceed. Depending on the free URL shortening service that you're using, the button will say something to the effect of "Create," "Snip URL" or "Make Tiny URL." It will generate a short URL that can be copied and pasted into a Twitter post, Facebook post, email, website or anywhere else that you need a shorter link URL.

  6. Step 6

Copy and paste the newly-created tiny URL into the Twitter post, Facebook post, email, website or anywhere else that you need a shorter link URL.
