How to Clean An Asphalt Driveway

To increase the durability of an asphalt driveway it is important to keep your driveway clean. All oil stains and other spills should be cleaned up immediately. The longer the chemicals remain on the asphalt the more likely they are to seep into the asphalt and cause severe damage.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lawn edging tool, a spade or an ice chipper
  • Water hose or air compressor
  • Broom or brush
  • Driveway cleaner
  • Oil spot primer
  • Durable vacuum cleaner
  1. Step 1

    Using a lawn edging tool, a spade or an ice chipper remove all weeds, grass and debris from the edges of the asphalt.

  2. Step 2

    Use a strong blast of water from a water hose, or a strong blast of air from an air compressor to remove all loose asphalt from cracks and damaged areas of asphalt.

  3. Step 3

    Using a broom or large brush remove all debris and loose asphalt.

  4. Step 4

    Scrub asphalt driveway with driveway cleaner to remove all oil and dirt. Repeat scrubbing the stains as necessary until all stains are removed.

  5. Step 5

    Use an oil spot primer to remove any stains that remain after repeated scrubbing with driveway cleaner.

  6. Step 6

    Starting at the top of the driveway use a water hose to thoroughly rinse driveway, rinsing down and towards the sides.

  7. Step 7

    Use a durable vacuum cleaner to remove all loose debris and asphalt from the cracks.
